Updated: Jan 6, 2021
Looking for some great acting books? In previous posts, I listed my top 10 Books Every Actor Needs as well as The Best Books and Resources for Shakespearean Actors. In this post, I'm going to give you my favorite books specifically for helping you prepare for an audition.
1. Audition by Michael Shurtleff
This book is an absolute classic, and for good reason. The 12 Guideposts taught in this book is a powerful set of tools that help you quickly and effectively penetrate a text and find the most important things to play in a scene or monologue. With this book you'll know how to create a dynamic and impressive performance in the audition room.
2. How to Choose a Monologue for Any Audition by Karen Kohlhaas
Finding and choosing great audition monologues is one of the most challenging and tedious tasks an actor has to do. Sometimes it feels like there's just never the right material out there for you. This book is the best resource to guide you through the process. It gives you excellent tips regarding the various types of monologues you should have in your arsenal as well as what types of monologues to use for different types of auditions.
3. The Monologue Audition: A Practical Guide for Actors by Karen Kohlhaas
Finding a great monologue is just the beginning. Rehearsing and performing a monologue for an audition is another great challenge. This book takes you step-by-step through the process; it shows you how to analyze your monologue, break it down into chunks, make interesting acting choices, and stage the monologue in a dynamic way.
4. Tips: Ideas for Actors by Jon Jory
This book isn't specifically for auditions, but I think it's particular helpful for them. Each page contains a concise, clearly written passage on a particular acting tip. If you're ever stuck or not sure about a certain situation, browse the table of contents of this book and see if the issue or problem is addressed here. The advice is refreshingly simple, clear, and practical.
